What Are Chemical Peels?

Over time, the buildup of oil, debris, and dirt on the face can leave skin looking dull and damaged. Normal cleansing and exfoliating alone aren’t enough and chemical peels are needed. Chemical peels involve applying chemical solutions to the skin that force the top layers of the skin to peel away, revealing rejuvenated skin underneath. Chemical peels are less invasive than laser surfacing, and it is a safe and well-tolerated procedure. You will often hear talk about superficial, medium, and deep chemical peels. With Chemical Peels at Be CLINICAL we can customize the peel solution to meet your skincare goals. Here are the differences between the three levels of peeling:

Superficial peels: Superficial peels are usually performed using naturally-occurring acids, and they peel away only the damaged outer layers of the epidermis. They treat fine lines, pigmentation abnormalities, dry skin, and acne scars. This procedure only takes about 15 minutes, but will yield significant results.

Medium peels: Medium peels penetrate more deeply into the skin by using more powerful chemical solutions. It penetrates through the epidermis and into the dermis, promoting greater cell turnover and collagen production to transform the skin structure. This procedure generally takes about 45 minutes.

Deep peels: Deep peels produce the most dramatic results, and outcomes last for many years, but require about 1-2 hours in-office and an extended recovery time. This type of peel is not appropriate for patients with dark complexions, because it may result in long-lasting discoloration. Deep peels smooth out deep lines, severe acne scars, and considerable sun damage.

The Chemical Peel Acids / Solutions

Glycolic Acid

This is an alpha hydroxy acid (AHA) that both exfoliates and moisturizes the skin, and is commonly used in various peels and skincare solutions.

Kojic Acid

Kojic acid lightens, brightens and tightens the skin, and it also has anti-microbial properties. It is known as a natural skin lightener, and can be used to treat even severe hyperpigmentation.

Lactic Acid

Lactic acid effectively removes the damaged upper layers of the skin and encourages new skin growth.

Trichloroacetic Acid (TCA)

This rapidly-penetrating acid exfoliates the top layer of the skin over the course of several days.

Jessner

Jessner is a medium-depth chemical that combines lactic acid, salicylic acid and resorcinol.

Salicylic Acid

Salicylic is a highly effective peeling agent used in superficial peels. It combats facial oil and active acne.

Alpha Hydroxy Acids

AHAs promote easy peeling by loosening the substances that hold the surface skin cells together.

Vitamin C

This vitamin delivers noticeable skin brightening results.
